The history of Tajco

Tajco was established in 1946 in Denmark as Tage Jensen & Co., later Tajco, and thus has a history of 65 years within the production and sale of car parts behind it. Tajco was established in Esbjerg, Denmark and, for the first 30 years, functioned as a traditional Danish crafts company, producing tail pipes for cars and selling car parts.

In 1986, the company was taken over by Svend Aage Lorenz, who had run a plumbing company in Grindsted, Denmark since he was 20. After the change of ownership, the company was moved to Grindsted, where the company began to take off. Production was streamlined and the company began exporting, primarily to the German market, which remains Tajco’s most important market to this day. In 1988, the company acquired RACO in Herlev, which primarily produced pole shoes of pressure-moulded brass. Both companies were united in new premises at the current address in Grindsted, Odinsvej 1, Denmark.

As a result of the new initiatives, Tajco became an interesting business partner on the aftermarket for automotive equipment. Tajco’s product portfolio now comprised tail pipes, pressure-moulded pole shoes and jump-start cables. Tajco grew rapidly in the years that followed and was awarded several prizes, including company of the year. In 1992, Tajco acquired a competitor in Germany. This resulted in better access to the German market for accessories with customers such as BMW and Mercedes.

1997 saw the start of the company’s third phase, when the two sons Kurt and Frank Lorenz took over production. The production of pressure-moulded brass was moved to a subsidiary in Estonia in 1999. The same year witnessed the start of a new era in Tajco´s history, as it entered the Serial-market at BMW directly. Tajco manufactured its first stainless steel tail pipes for BMW in early 2000 and, in 2003, became ISO 9001 certified, which meant greater acceptance in the automotive industry. This really whetted the appetite of Frank and Kurt Lorenz, as they could see the scale of the market that was suddenly opening up to Tajco, if they could supply the German automotive industry directly. The focus on development therefore intensified substantially, with Frank and Kurt as prime motor and, for the next few years, they were responsible for all development.

In 2001, Svend Aage Lorenz left Tajco and Frank and Kurt also took over the Sales Department, and had approx. 35-40 employees. Svend Aage Lorenz’s departure left room for manoeuvre, which allowed the development that had been started in 2000 to gain impetus. In 2004, it was decided to start production in China with effect from 1 April 2005. At this time, there were 130 employees at Tajco. The rapid growth, however, presented a number of new managerial challenges and, from 2006, Kurt and Frank decided to hand over the reins to a professional board and a new management team. In 2006 Tajco also build own factory in Ningbo in China.

This started the company’s fourth and current phase, working globally and employing about two hundred people in China, Denmark and Germany.

In January 2006, the company became certified according to the automotive industry’s stringent TS 16949 standard in Denmark and the year after in China, and work is currently underway to achieve group certification.
